FROM THE ARCHIVES: In 1881 Lieutenant Adolphus W. Greely led a 25-man team of American observers into the Arctic. Only six survived. The San Diego Union-Tribune will mark its 150th anniversary in 2018 by presenting a significant front page from the archives each day throughout the year. In 1884 Adolphus Greely and six other survivors, stranded for three years in the Arctic, were rescued after a newspaper campaign started by Greely's wife, Henrietta Nesmith Greely, and Douglas Gunn, Editor of the San Diego Union.
