Presidio Twilight Returns Thursday, May 17

2018-05-17T15:00:03+0000

Off the Grid’s other summer party is back for the season — starting tonight and running every Thursday through Sept. 20.

The Twilight Zone may be full of ghouls and people who broke their glasses after a nuclear apocalypse, but twilight itself is probably the second-best part of the day after happy hour. Sometimes the two even overlap, as at the Presidio Trust and Off the Grid’s Presidio Twilight, a companion party ...

What does it take to rescue somebody from cold, swift, and dangerous water? Park staff spent three days training in swiftwater rescue procedures in Kings Canyon last week!

Remember, use caution around rivers - even if you don't intend to swim! Many river emergencies happen when visitors accidentally fall in to the water.

Thanks to Sierra Rescue for the training and the photos! ...

Why isn't kayaking allowed on the south fork of the kings river within the park?

I grew up camping in Kiings Canyoun Ntl Park. The Kings River is melted snow. It is so extremely cold and swift moving. A body will go numb quickly and can be swept awa.

Where are these pictures taken?... exactly

Some spate there Bill Ginn 😊

Just one day? When I took this training in Cedar Grove in 2009 it was three days long. That water was horribly cold and I used a 3/2mm surfing wetsuit. I had rhinitis the whole time. The only time it stopped was when I got back in the water. When I got out though, my nose just ran and ran and ran with sinus headache and sneezing, but I did not catch a cold or get sick in any other way, fortunately. I was nearly the oldest student in the group at 58.

Great pictures, thanks!

My Sister fell in the Kings River when she was quite small and Mom who didn't swim and didn't like being in the water jumped in up to her chest and grabbed her and brought her to safety. Many years ago.

Seller's Jay.

3 fledgling Eastern Phoebes

Anna's hummer in the rain.

Female mallard!

I rarely see a bird. When I do, it's usually an Egret.

Western Bluebird

Heard Mourning Doves this AM, but yesterday encountered a robin! Rare for this part of the world in May!

A matter of fact it was. Went out 5:30am there she was shakinh the rain off. I heard many local bird in the bush tryin to cherp tha rain away. They were so wet. I worry about an finch setting on four egg on the evergreen next to the house.

Hooded Oriole. What a brilliant yellow when I opened my blinds this morning. He is a shy bird and quickly flew off.

i believe a kestrel flew overhead this morning as i walked to the office. but of course at home i saw my regulars customers - house finches, gold finches, mourning doves, dark-eyed's, white-capped finches and sometimes, the oriole couple, not to mention the rufous hummies that can't seem to understand there's enough food to go around. :)

I see these every day. I didn’t know what they were

Wild turkey. I’ve never seen the Western Kingbird. Will look for it. Thanks for the post.

Stellar's Jay in Julian.

Say's Phoebe Flycatcher!

Mocking bird.

Male Eastern bluebird at my window.

Black Phoebe

Strawberry finch. Why are they suddenly in Novato?

Nice pic!!

So maybe postpone the hike up Moro Rock till the weather clears?

Carolyn Charan Deller look at that lightning babe!!

Awesome

Time to go to Morro Rock and watch the fireworks !

Natasha Beaulieu maybe it’ll keep the crowds away.

Looking forward to a lightning storm. 🤗

Will be there on Monday, would be awesome to see some lightning. Extremely rare in So Cal.

Shane we were there at the wrong time, need to go back 🇺🇸 ✈️

Pffff...this was our last road trip......

Lightning in the Sierras is no "light matter" to be shrugged off nonchalantly. There are no really good safe places to be in the outdoors! Even in daylight, lightning is striking all around during storm activity. Be very aware; don't be a statistic!

Arondi Dingson LaLa Dingson gonna be epic! :) :) Monday will be sunny btw.

Awesome!

The Cedar Grove Visitor Center opened for the season yesterday!

The photo on the left is of the old Cedar Grove Hotel, which was built when Kings Canyon was managed by the Forest Service. The builders/entrepreneurs didn't get a permit to cut the timber or run a hotel, so they were fined $5,000 (which back in the late 1800's was quite a hefty fine!). The hotel was never used, but some of it's timbers went into making the "new" ranger residence, which turned into a visitor center years later. Looks like they must have used the same architect, also!

Come check out our quaint little cabin and say hi to our new seasonal rangers!

Congratulations to long time Jr Sharks alumni, Chris Buchanan, Theo Tydingco and Dylan Vander Esch who played collegiate hockey and graduated this spring.

Buchanan, who is more commonly known as “Moe,” is a ‘94 birth year defenseman who graduated from Bentley University with cum laude honors. His grandfather and father, aka “Big Andy” and “Little Andy,” were long time coaches for the Jr Sharks club.

Tydingco, a ‘93 defenseman, was selected team captain his senior year for the Wesleyan University Cardinals. He is returning to the Bay Area this fall and will be an Assistant Coach on the Jr Sharks 15AAA team this upcoming season. His father, Norbert, was also a long time coach in the program.

VanderEsch, a ‘93 birth year forward, graduated from SUNY Potsdam with magna cum laude honors. He was the leading scorer for the Bears the last few seasons and also played some pro hockey in the SPHL. You may have seen “Vandy” around the rink most summers since he has worked as a strength and conditioning coach for our camps and clinics. His mother, Elizabeth, was an active volunteer in the program helping out with various event over the years.

Again, congratulations to these fine young gentlemen and their families for their accomplishments in the classroom and on the ice. All three will do great things in their next chapter of life. Your Jr Sharks family is proud of you! Way to go Moe! Congrats Theo! Vandy is a dandy!
